They are mounted to the top of the beds frame and usually will leave storage room below the tool box. This style will benefit those that want to maintain storage throughout the length of their entire trucks bed. This style comes in both aluminum and plastic.

If you have a roll bar system in your truck or a headache rack, you can find this style of tool box configuration will mount seamlessly with this system. The purpose behind this type of style allows you to have the tool box you need, without giving up any more space than you need to.

Under the Side Truck Bed Tool Boxes
The “Under the Side” truck bed tool boxes are not as popular as “over the side” style of tool boxes; these can be found on the market. These units will get mounted to another unit, such as the frame of a headache rack, and they will sit lower in the truck bed than other tool boxes. They usually are found sitting flush with the floor of the truck bed, with no room left over beneath it.

Swing Out Truck Bed Tool Boxes
The newest style is the “Swing out” truck bed tool boxes. They operate by being mounted on a swing arm behind the vehicles tailgate. When they are locked, they take up the space between the tailgates. When the tailgate is lowered, the tool box can be swung out for immediate, easy access for all the items stored inside.

You will find that many of these truck bed tool boxes come with either single or double lids. Single lids promise the user a single locking point and easy opening, but dual lids are much more convenient for a well organized tool box. Also, most dual lid systems will have a lock for each lid.  The lids rather than being hinged across the length of the back, they are hinged in the center and open towards each other.

Finding the best truck tools box for your needs will depend on what space you have available and where you want to store it. You need to think about what kind of opening you need and how you plan on mounting it. Plus you need to decide on the material you prefer. Lots of thought needs to go into purchasing the box.
